I am passionate about Maths and Science. I am particularly passionate about the education aspects of these two subjects.
With that in mind, I began the journey of looking at those women in particular who are inspirations and whose contributions are vital towards the advancements of Maths and Science in this country. Women who not only inspire me with their excellent achievements but who are role models to other women for the challenges that their life stories have experienced and with the victories earned.
Professor Mamokgethi Phakeng is one of the women of this country who has proved all stereotypes wrong. A force in the academic arena, a change-maker, mother and all-rounder of note.
Day 10 of my Women’s Month Appreciation series paid my acknowledgements and tribute to her for her wonderful life story and achievements.
What an inspiration!.
Day 10 of my Women’s Month Appreciation series and today, whilst keeping with the theme of distinguished women in the Maths and Science arena, I honour Professor Mamokgethi Phakeng.
I must admit, I easily run out of adjectives to properly describe the greatness of this woman.
The first black woman holder of a PhD in Mathematics, boasting over 80 research papers and 5 edited published volumes under her belt, it’s almost unbelievable how one individual can achieve that much in her lifetime!
An ageless beauty.
An outstanding leading woman with a career that is beyond brilliance and achievements that are of sheer excellence. Current Deputy Vice Chancellor of research and Internationalization at UCT, previous Vice Principal: Research and Innovation at UNISA and Honorary Professor of Mathematics Education at WITS University to mention about a few.
A trailblazer indeed.
Even with her accomplishments, she still has time to give back through her NPO called Adopt-A-Learner Foundation where they provide financial and educational support to students from rural areas to acquire higher education qualifications.
I think I speak on behalf of most when I say the country is blessed to have women of such stature and intellect. A woman who is beyond being an inspiration. The type of person required in our basic and higher education government departments.
I just remember her as my adorner during my graduation ceremonies and little did I know then of how a powerful character this woman was and how her achievements will become a driving force in my own journey.
A very happy women’s month to you!
You inspire me.
