Day 11 – 25 year old Chemistry PhD candidate Masaku Mpho Kgatle

Masaku Mpho KgatlenIn keeping with the theme of women doing wonders in the fields of maths and science, this young and bright woman simply could not miss out on making the list.

The Day 11 post for my women’s month appreciation series went to Masaku Mpho Kgatle, former varsity classmate of mine, who at her young age is already making her mark in the academia arena.

She chose and went further with a science subject that most, including myself, feared because of how difficult it was to just go glide through its tough first year modules – Chemistry. Ask any Geology student, particularly from where I studied, how Chemistry was and you will thank me later. She is currently a doctorate candidate in the field and is already on course towards making her own history.

She became popular after appearing on a local dating TV show and even though the bachelor of the show did not choose her, the poor guy was intimidated shame, her success in what she has been able to achieve to date trended the most. I must say, I was relieved that she did not go on a date with the guy. Poor chap thought as a Phd candidate, Masaku was going to be a ‘medical’ doctor. Alas.

This post is dedicated to all the young women of this country who are constantly proving the stereotypes of maths and science being ‘too difficult’, ‘boring’ and male-dominated wrong. Thank you for all your contributions towards this fight.

Day 11 of my Women’s Month Appreciation series and today’s special woman is introduced appropriately by a quote by Ralph W. Emerson, which says

“Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail”

That’s exactly what this lady has done!

One of the very few individuals in our class that survived the dreaded Chemistry classes, enjoyed it and even continued further up her studies with it. I respect you greatly for that.

At her very young age, a trailblazer of note. One of many that I am extremely proud of.

A PhD in Chemistry candidate.

Doesn’t get any better than that and today I celebrate you in your marvelous journey of success that many, including myself, fear to take. And you did it and are still doing it, gracefully at that.

It’s just a matter of time until your name is written amongst the stars of record-breakers and young women who are proving to everyone how they are more capable and able to do what it is that they put their minds towards.

And when you are looking for a life partner, forget about the hype and just attend conferences!!!

You are an inspiration. Continue flying high, behind you all the way!

We’re proud of you and you are celebrated.

A very happy women’s month to you!!

Foe exemplifying beauty its all of its ways and forms.

Masaku Mpho Kgatle
