As a budding writer myself, I always see myself asking ‘Is there a living to be earned from writing?’ In as much that is a very open-ended and relative question, I feel it’s a question most writers ask themselves and ponder about.
Then comes the inspirational story of British novelist Joanne Rowling and the tides begin to turn. An exceptional, credible and hugely successful writer whose work on the popular Harry Potter series has made her a deserving high-earner and an inspiration to millions worldwide.
I always remember the hype around her release of a new book to the series and how people and avid fans would camp out at book stores to be the very first to get copies of this woman’s work. She has not only contributed positively towards encouraging the culture of reading in all nations but has changed the reading club arena forever.
On the 12th day of my women’s appreciation series, I dedicated it to this writing sensation who has given new meaning to writing as not only being ‘just a skill’ but a trait worthy of being an asset to be treasured. Here is a re-cap of that post below.
Day 12 of my Women’s Month Appreciation series and today, much-needed credit and praise goes out to a 52 year old writing powerhouse who has succeeded in proving a stereotype wrong.
This British novelist is the brains behind the best-selling book series in history, The Harry Potter fantasy which has over 400 million copies – proof enough that there is a market in reading.
This woman is simply an outstanding writer.
An imaginative soul whose mind thoughts are worth millions, both in hardcopy and as adaptation on-screen.
Recently, Forbes Magazine announced her as the highest paid author in the world, dethrowning James Patterson who has held that title for about 10 years. And this year was the first time that she was given this title.
It is reported that she earned about $95 million over the period of June 2016 – May 2017, largely due to a new Harry Potter stage play she engineered and the release of ‘Fantastic Beasts and where to find them’ of which she wrote and co-produced.
To all budding writers and to many other women writers across the globe, look at this woman and her story and allow that to be your light to keep on going. You are celebrated.
And then they say there is no money in writing!
For making history by doing what you love.
For making the urge of writing not only fashionable but lucrative and worthwhile.
A happy women’s month to you!
Joanne AKA J. K. Rowling.
