Day 16 – Newsroom Forces

I onced worked at a campus radio station while doing my final post-graduate year at varsity. Voice of Wits (VoW FM) was everything to me, such that it diverted my attention somewhat from my Geology studies. All this for a good purpose, as a hidden fire inside of me was fueled up when I got this once in a life-time opportunity to work for their newsrooom department. An opportunity I never regret taking.

What a very memorable year that was. Little did I know that it was at VoW FM and in particular, The Newsroom, where my heart was most comfortable and settled. I met incredible people with different passions and ambitions there.

Although the newsroom was female-dominated, it is for this fact that the place was more warm, welcoming and wonderful.

With that, I decided to dedicate my Day 16 of my women’s month appreciation series to Sibahle Motha, Rofhiwa Madzena, Slindelokuhle Masikane and  Gaopalelwe Phalaetsile. Young women who are making waves for themselves in the media and journalism industry, each with a future shining brightly as ever.

Here is a brief look into their stories of success as I recap on the post.

Day 16 of my Women’s Month Appreciation series and today goes out to these lovely news and current affairs ladies who I once had the privilege of working with.

Very opinionated, smart, spunky, committed and current affairs junkies like myself. Each doing very well with a promising career in the news industry.

Two of which, I kid you not, I share a birthday with!

Rofhiwa Evangeline Madzena who works for CNBC Africa was one of the very first people to welcome me into the news department at VOW FM when I had no clue how things operated, by far the sweetest soul I have ever interacted with. Still remember how you called me your ‘minion?’ Lol, you were the best. When I remember you, I also recall Rethabile as well. You two taught me a lot. May your kind-hearted-spirit and nature never cease and continue to flourish in your exciting career!

Sibahle Motha was also a senior to me, also very warm, patient and welcoming. Was very straightforward from the get go and refused to be dictated upon. Your defiance and character helped me find my own as well. The one person who I know, loves her job completely and never takes it for granted. You inspire me and keep on shining! I wish you well over your time at Jacaranda FM.

Slindelo Masikane oh Sli, where do I even begin describing your awesomeness? Can it even be described? It was a pleasure doing shifts with you, your humour and spunk was life. A creative and talented masterpiece you are. I still see you hosting your own funky radio show one day. Such a happy person overall, and that kind of energy was easily transferred to those around you. Continue climbing and being that bright spark there at Jacaranda!

Gaopalelwe Phalaetsile is a female version my myself, seeing that we were born on the same day, no wonder we are fans of long posts and debates on Facebook. We argued the most while there at VOW but I guess it had to do with the passion we both exuded for the job and the topics. You are doing wonders for yourself and are contributing towards the empowerment of the womxn voice and thought. I celebrate you and wish you well with your journey further.

I rest assured daily that with these wonderful and credible women in the news industry, we are well taken care of and well informed.

A very happy women’s month to you ladies!

You are celebrated, remembered and appreciated.
