Day 20 – Anti-slavery mastermind, Harriet Tubman

It’s a historical fact that women are masterminds. As early as the mid-1820s, there lived a woman in this world who made it her life’s mission to end slavery, no matter the cost & threats to her life.
The moving story of Harriet Tubman, who was born into slavery in the United States was the embody of all that was to the benefit and well-being of human beings.

A woman of strength, courage, bravery and resilience. A civil servant.

She was beaten, bruised and battered for years and subjected to the harshest forms of ill-treatments from her ‘masters’.

After finding the strength to escape, she devised carefully constructed missions to help get over a thousand slaves freed.

In a time when slavery, today, is more indirect and more in the mind and at times in thoughts, I dedicated some time on Day 20 of my women’s month appreciation series to reflect on the historic milestone that Tubman contributed towards.

Her name is certainly one that will continue living on in the hearts and minds of those who were born into a system that favoured oppression over liberation.

Here is a recap of that post.

Day 20 of my Women’s Month Appreciation series and today’s post pays special tribute to a woman whose name and impact in history is still echoed long beyond her passing.

Born into slavery in Maryland, United States in 1822, this remarkable woman was beaten, bruised and whipped by her many masters, even as a child.

A civil war nurse, humanitarian and civil rights activist by profession, this woman managed to escape slavery from her state in 1849 to Philadelphia. She then came back to rescue her family, friends and relatives from slavery. She then slowly, over time, guided over a thousand of other groups of slaves to freedom.

She used a variety of antislavery networks and safe houses to ensure that other slaves got freedom from the torture they were experiencing. It is said that she devised about 13 missions to rescue slaves in the US.

I would easily call her strategic thinking and planning process a master piece considering the time of execution and era.

Proof that women do not easily leave others behind. Proof of the great potential in a woman’s thought process.

A devoted Christian, who passed on due to pneumonia at the age of 91. What a life!

Today and beyond, I celebrate this woman’s amazing work and brilliant tact. The many awesome quotes that her life has left us with shall resonate in our hearts and in the hearts of those to come.

I am still learning more about this woman and her work in detail and would encourage you to do the same, if you can. Imagine the many other great women of her time and calibre that we can discover and even to date, learn a lot from?

A very happy women’s month to you!

As I remember, the great…

Harriet Tubman.
