So many have gone before us, even before we set foot into this world.
Born on the 17th December 1919 in Marabastad, Pretoria Ezekiel ‘Es’kia’ Mphahlele will forever remain one of the founding pioneers of modern African literature and humanism. A writer, teacher and activist who dedicated his entire life towards ensuring that the African stories, identity and footprint remains edged in the history books.
Who are we to not know who we are and to question our existence?
No one else needs to tell and own our stories but ourselves.
The first black South African to obtain a MA in Literature – Cum Laude, from The University of South Africa in the 1960s and later a Doctorate from the University of Denver in the USA in 1968.
He would have been a 100 years old this year after passing on 12 years ago on the 27th October.
Next time you happen to drive on the popular Es’kia Mphahlele drive in Pretoria, take a moment to reflect and appreciate the legend that he was and his countless, illustrious contributions to Ubuntu and the African literature narrative and perspective.
Remember to celebrate and honour The Silent Heroes.
